Neurophysiotherapy

I am a trained and experienced neurophysiotherapist - which is a physiotherapist plus extra training - and below is an explanation about the difference.

Neuro Physiotherapists have specialist understanding, and an in depth knowledge of, Neurological conditions. We are highly skilled in facilitating movement and work with patients in learning new movements to achieve functional goals.

NeuroPhysiotherapy involves improving mobility, balance and co-ordination, as well as prescribing individualised exercises aimed at increasing strength and body awareness. If you've ever been to a musculo-skeletal physiotherapist, you'll be surprised at how different a neuro-physiotherapy session is.

My approach can be quite "hands on" as the body needs guidance to do the activities it has lost the ability to do and in doing this it helps re-educate the brain (and Central Nervous System) on how to achieve these movements.

This involves me, the physiotherapist, working with you, the patient, through movement, to re-align joints and muscles to allow optimal activity. It can be quite tiring both physically and mentally, due to concentrating hard, for the patient but by re-education of the brain, progress can be made. To maintain this, strengthening work is often required and these new movements need to be functional for every day tasks.

However, the care I am providing can also be quite "hands off" where I am listening to your concerns and offer advice and explanation where appropriate. It is also quite common for me to give you some exercises to do . The Central Nervous System has a remarkable ability to reorganize and recover after injury.

NeuroPhysiotherapy aims to enhance this recovery by relearning the skills needed to improve function in patients with neurological injury or disease. This includes patients with balance difficulties, and those suffering with chronic pain.
